The Google Web Site Optimizer tool is an A/B and multivariate Web site testing tool that lets site owners fine-tune the design, merchandising, and messaging of landing pages, navigation elements, even site-wide graphic design style sheets.

Tracking real customers shopping in real time, Timberline staff has experience in such tests as:

  • Different homepage images and sales copy
  • More conspicuous “call-to-action” buttons on navigation
  • Simplified inquiry forms with larger submit button and more content “above the fold.”

The Results: In one Google Web Site Optimizer experiment, the best-performing combination trumped others by 14%. In another, visitors seeing a green-colored button distinguished from the rest of the top navigation bar were 13% more likely to convert. In separate testing, a redesigned inquiry form turned in even more impressive results: the completion rate of customers starting the form jumped 36% after the redesign.

Good post, Ted. Two other things about Google Website Optimizer and testing in general:

1) We can also use Google Website Optimizer to A/B test two CSS style sheets against each other -- so you could see the impact of a site-wide color scheme or other graphic design.

2) Google's tool is a good way to test a single page at a time. On the TI commerce platform we can develop more sophisticated test that involves several pages, or "page sets".
